Around Longyearbyen
Monday, 30 March 2015
Snowstorm just next day after arrival. Quite common weather during winter with wind speeds exceeding 50 km/h and a lot of blowing snow.
Wind froms.
Snow is blown into 2 m high snowdrifts.
Pieces of sea ice defying the wind.
Waiting for the short summer.
Over ice drifting snow.
More snowdrifts.
Frozen coast after the storm.
Wind blew away the snow and exposed ice that forms during freezing rain.
Snowmobile track and ice-covered Adventalen.
Polar bears all over Svalbard.
Blue ice blister. Groundwater that was expelled on surface by ground freezing.
Blue.
Sky is normally the one that is blue. But not this time.
After every storm comes the sun.
And reindeers.
That don't care much about the people.
Mining heritage of Longyearbyen.
On a way to Sverdruphamaren.
Almost there, but high temperatures and snow conditions were not too good to go to plateau.
Adventfjorden with strange sea ice forms.
Just a bit of sun durng a cloudy day at the nicest place.
Gully above the road to the airport.
With a slab failure.
Towards the global seed vault ...
Reindeers everywhere.
Here it is.
Remoteness, permafrost and tectonic stability make very suitable location to store seeds.
According to wikipedia, there is already around 800 000 seeds stored at -18 °C and low oxygen conditions. The main purpose is to preserve genetic diversity of plants.

Ice climbing place near Longyearbyen.
Towards the Longyearbreen glacier next day. It was the only sunny place, because of descending dry air from Nordenskiöld.
In contrast to cloudy Nybyen.
We were not alone.
Snowboard cut in half.
Going through meltwater channel which is also the main snowmobile track to Barentsburg.
Damm, a dam.
Longyearbreen glacier from its moraine.
Calm and sunny weather unlike elsewhere.
Foehn wall on the right side and forming clouds on the other side.
But the weather is starting to improve.
A lot of drifting snow in the upper part.
Walking on a highway.
Wind is getting stronger.
Almost by the ice cave.
Drifting snow created magical atmosphere.

Tourists came and weather became nicer.
Longyearbyen from homonymous glacier.
Magnificent twilight wedge above Adventalen.
And as visible from Sjøskrenten.
And slowly faded away.
