At UNIS
Sunday, 14 June 2015
UNIS - The University Centre in Svalbard is the world’s northernmost higher education institution and offers courses in Arctic Geology, Arctic Biology, Arctic Geophysics and Arctic Technology.
One cold March morning in front of the UNIS.
At the reception.
Hallways.
Not a bad view.
Wood and copper interior.
Lecture room.
The northernmost library.
?!?
A cozy reading corner.
The Canteen.
Fireplace where they never make fire with Svalbard wood.
And my favourite corner.
UNIS student representatives take a care for many social activities. As UNIS winter olympics organised on the 1st of May for example.
First discipline was a biathlon relay.
With a pillow instead of a stick.
And a "drinking range" instead of a shooting range.
A fight between orange jacket and topless team.
Female member of the topless team.
That eventually fell in love with Jefim's ski.
Very good ski shoes brand by the way.
The next discipline was a bum sliding. Majority of the competitors used snow gliders.
Some used other requisites ...
Eeeerm, where did you get that?
Barbecue bowl.
"Eeeerm, Jefim, maybe you should have rather taken this instead".
Start!
Stian stole the starting flag, and then, as a true gentleman, also crashed into Camilla.
Ups.
The winner is the one who crosses the finish line first. In one way or another.
Several heats ...
And acrobatics.
čuču
The last discipline was a competition between self made sledges. This Carlsberg sledge won last year.
When Leo is still courageous.
And when Leo is scared.
Unicorn (uniauger) reindeer team.
Crashing shortly before the finish line.
The Cool Kitchen team.
With a dragon composition.
Taking the lead.
Who is the best?!
Red jacket team on a sailsledge with a fire thrust.
Snowsplash.
And finishing the first.
And celebrating.
Serving the welcome drink for fjord-to-fjord cruise on the last day of May.
On board of the MS Billefjorden.
Cold but still pleasant evening in Isfjorden.
Cruising towards south.
Pilarberget
Gullied cliffs.
And a polar fox chasing geese on the slope.
A coal mine with mine dumps underneath.
Again passing the abandoned mining settlement Grumantbyen.
Abandoned buildings.
Still some glacier ice from the other side of the Isfjord.
Skål
Enjoying the evening sun.
A rail connecting Grumantbyen and ...
Colesbukta.
The sttelment where the coal was loaded in to ships. Also abandoned.
After the dinner.
The party captain.
Dancing queens.
"I tell you, Aass is much better than Isbjørn".
Few portraits: Adipop
Jefim
Maria
Babecue is over.
And Sjur is getting tired. So it is time to go back.
Return during the midnight sun.
Vestpynten and Bjørndalen.
Back in Longyearbyen.
Party captain announced the end. The reaction can be seen from gestures of participants.
Parked MS Billefjorden.
