Bispen and Store Trolltinden 21.-22.8. 2021
Saturday, 21 August 2021
Picturesque waterfalls greeting us after a heavy rain in Romsdalen.
Staying on Kolmanneset again before heading to the mountains.
Justyna smiling as the weather is getting better.
Pssst. I will tell you a secret.
A lot of miniature roche moutonnée formations with steeper faces pointing towards the glacier flow direction. Actually the whole area is one big roche moutonnée.
Trollstigen as seen below from Isterdalen.
A short walk along anthropogenic cascades and tourist facilities on famous Trollstigen, while waiting for the weather to get better.
Norwegian hiking signs are not appropriate for steep hikes. They show only horizontal distance.
Finally some sun rays on the horizon.
So I decided for a quick hike up Bispen (still covered in mists) as seen from a half way to the lake.
And here is the lake. It took me half an hour for 0.9 km. Damn I'm slow. The trail to Bispen goes up from the other side.
Turquoise Bispevatnet as a consequence of its water being fed by the glaciers.
It was quite challenging to follow the path to Bispen along the lake, which was marked only with a cairn here and there.
Nearby Kongen still envield by mists.
The paths steepens.
Offering nice panoramas of the surroundings.
Steep trails that I'm more used from the Alps.
Partly also on block and stones.
A couple on the summit of Kongen (1614 m).
Clouds are getting less and less dense revealing the nearby mountains.
Me like this mountain.
Here comes the view of Isterdalen.
Group of hikers returning from the summit.
A short walk on the ridge.
The summit of Bispen (1462 m) and Finnan (1786 m) in the background.
Content Jaroš.
The ridge was especially steep on the right.
Trollstigen visitor centre as seen from the summit.
And the Trollstigen Mountain Pass itself.
And Molde visited two years ago.
Panorama towards east over Isterdalen.
The better half waiting by the lake.
And this is the tomorrow's destination.
But before that, heading to a nice place to stay overnight.
Such stairs made by Nepal sherpas are more and more common in Norway.
Trollstigen was built in 1936 after 8 years of construction and is nowadays one of the main Norwegian tourist attractions.
The sun is setting behind Finnan.
Spring source under the blockfield.
Towards Stigbotnen cirque.
A cross spider in the middle of nowhere.
Some green patches still cover rocks on this elevation.
Stigbotnvatnet is where we are staying overnight.
A small surprise was amanita mushroom growing here.
A rock shelter and a tool that was supposedly used to build it.
Good night.
And good morning.
Stigbotthornet over the Stigbotnvatnet.
Can you spot a well camouflaged ptarmigan?
Carnivorous leaves of Common Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris).
Entering the blockfield realm.
View down the valley.
An this is where the Trolltinden peaks start to appear.
Passing by some lakes.
And snow patches.
Eclogite rock with a plenty of granate minerals.
Trolltindens with the Store Trolltinden on the left.
Unnamed glacier valley on our left.
Still following the trail.
That ends here, by the rockface over Romsdalen.
Romsdalshornet and Store Venjetindin behind.
Here under Trolltindens I decided went to find the unmarked trail to the Store Trolltinden by myself.
No trace of trail so far. Just scrambling over some rocks.
Eventually I managed to catch some people and find the trail ...
under these rock columns.
The trail is better marked here, at more exposed places.
Walking around several of the Trolltinden spikes.
BASE jumping in this area is forbidden because of many fatalities.
Here is where a view to the magnificent Trollveggen opens.
The columns.
Continuing along the southwest Trolltinden slope.
Here, the trail turns upslope.
An easy climbing section.
These Germans had issues climbing the last part.
Here they go. Storgrovfjellet visible in the background.
The summit is not far anymore.
And somebody in wingsuit there.
The Germans were especially interested in interviewing the local BASE jumper.
Oh, there is another one.
And somebody climbing up the north ridge.
Good luck.
They even showed us the vantage point to take photos of them.
Here they go. Link to gif animation: http://jarosobu.net/images/Trolltinden_BASE.gif
Trollveggen is with 1100 m height the tallest rock wall in Europe. Romsdalen left of it.
Store Venjetindin looks a bit less impressive from the other side: http://jarosobu.net/index.php/event/Smorbottind181942020#&gid=gallery02e681aeef3d34df060212deef5229b5&pid=1255225
Adelsbreen Glacier under the summit.
Smørbottind skied a year and a half ago and Åndalsnes at the picture bottom.
On the summit of Store Trolltinden (1788 m).
A small shelter built in the blockfield.
Spending another evening close to Trollstigen; by Alnesvatnet.
Under the spectacular mountains. Bispen.
And Stigbotthornet.
