Excursion to Reindalen 15. 4. 2015
Wednesday, 15 April 2015
Stop in Todalen on the main snowmobile route to Sveagruva.
Up the valley.
Small avalanche just behind us.
About snowmobile routes and avalanche danger.
Valleys with direction perpendicular to prevalent wind direction are especially prone to cornice fall avalanches.
On the Gangskaret pass.
And avalanche on the pass.
Towards Gangdalen.
And already in Reindalen.
Heading south.
And then turning right into the upper part of Reindalen, where any motorised traffic is strictly prohibited.
Except for UNIS students once a year.
Windy weather and diffuse soft light.
An ice-cored moraine of Marta glacier. When glacier debris is thick enough, the glacier ice is preserved by permafrost aggradation beneath debris.
And here we are walking up the pingo again.
Slightly degraded pigno top.
And us having a lunchtime on the lee side of pingo.
Look down the Reindalen.
And the same ice-cored moraine from before.
Walk on the pingo rim.
When does an ice-cored moraine become a rock glacier?
Why are they looking in the ground not towards rock glaciers?
A lot of shattered rock.
Very effective frost weathering.
Even pebbles are nicely chopped.
Rock glacier discussion.
It looks like this one is rock glacier.
Coal on the other side of rim. "Why shouldn't we make a campfire here?".
Walking on coal.
Bum slide back down.
Look back.
And already another pingo in front of us.
Previous pingo from distance.
On the rim again.
Pingo "crater" formed from degraded ice core, meaning that this pingo is close to its death.
On a hunt for a pingo water sample. The weapon are plastic vails.
There might be some water close the frost blister.
Nothing.
Bum slide fun.
Maybe a dowsing rod would help.
There is some.
Is it salty?
And already on our way back. Sørhytta.
In Gagndalen.
Driving in river canyon between cornices.
Back on Gangskaret pass and turning into Bodalen.
To see another ice-cored moraine.
Altocumulus lenticularis clouds indicate strong wind.
Bodalen.
Drifting snow.
And trying out how to be polished by ice crystals.
And last stop by avalanche from picture 7.
A hole in the middle.
Sliding plane and striations.
