Plateau Mountains Birkafjellet and Hiorthfjellet
Wednesday, 29 April 2015
Cloudy Malardalen with some sunny hopes in the south.
Hungry seagulls feeding on dead reindeer.
Hopes came true and sun threw light on Laura and Patrick.
Our goal this time was to climb Birkafjellet.
Clouds were slowly disappearing.
Unpleasant walk up ...
the sliding sandstone plates ...
Typical periglacial slope debris.
But again clouds, wind and cold on the top.
Which is flat as many other tops around.
And sun again on the ridge.
With a bit more wind.
And look up the ridge.
And again Malardalen from the cloud base.
And view back on Birkafjellet which is now cloudless.
Unusual slope forms.
Malardalen for the last time before two-hour walk back to Longyearbyen.
After four weeks, again on the pass between Hirthfjellet and Adventtoppen. But this time we are turning right on Hirthfjellet.
A bit steeper but still pleasant ridge.
Waiting
for girls.
Mine and
hut, this time from above.
Adventdalen.
Almost there
Moraines in the cirque.
Huw already managed to proclaim a new land and build a fortress.
Almost completely flat top.
Which is, according to the most widespread interpretation, a relict valley bottom.
Birkafjellet which we climbed two weeks before and has roughly the same elevation slightly above 900 m.
Cecile and Sarah.
Huw going on the next ridge.
With few meters thick cornices.
So we decided to rather go back on the other side of plateau which is the highest with 928 m.
Groupie.
The edge.
And we went home. In odpujsali smo domov.
