Store Ringstind 1.-3.5. 2020
Friday, 01 May 2020
A group of Sloveks and French waking up in Fortundalen on the first day of May in 2020.
Up at Turtagrø at 880 m in winter conditions. A group of Slovaks are heading for Fannaråki, while French with two Sloveks set out to conquer Store Ringstind.
Some parts of the trail were already clear of snow at the beginning.
Some were the easiest to cross on moss and bushes.
Entering the Ringsdalen, which is 4 km long glacial Valley.
Waiting for the slowest.
The two craziest Frenchmen decided to change plan and ski one gully.
The gully and two dots below intending to go up there.
While me, Adrian and Terka are continuing towards Ringsbotn.
The steepest part with 40° to be climbed before reaching glacier.
The weather turned gradually worse.
Lunchtime on the glacier.
We were not the only that went up here in such, not the best weather.
Slowly but surely gaining elevation but also losing visibility.
Midtre Ringstind as much it could be seen.
Not far from the summit.
We did the last 50 m with crampons and ice axes.
On the top of Store Ringstind 2124m. The visibility was barely more than 10 m on the peak that it otherwise famous for one of the most spectacular views in Norway. More luck next time.
We took it more relaxed next day and went down to Lustrafjorden while other were still ski touring in fog and snow.
Urnes stave church.
The weather cleared up in the evening. Freshly opened Sognefjell mountain pass.
Far above-average snow amounts accumulated during this snow-rich winter, reaching up to 10m at some places.
On the Sognefjell.
Fannaråki hidden behind clouds.
We joined the others at the entrance to Leirdalen.
For staying overnight.
Enjoy evening by a campfire.
Leirdalen was still closed and the weather was again worse than forecasted. So we decided to try nearby slope of Loftet.
Slovakian brothers.
Peter and Nika.
Grouping up for consultation. The French continued up the slope while Slovekians decided to ski down.
We didn't come very far before the weather deteriorated even more.
Trying out the Peter's avalanche airbag.
