Sylt 20.-22. 11. 2018
Wednesday, 21 November 2018
On a cloudy and windy November morning in the north part of the northernmost German Island called Sylt.
It is a barrier island in the North Sea.
Made of sand, which is here blown away.
With some settlements as Westerheide.
It is mostly vegetated but some sand dunes are active.
On the one of them ...
Moving grass is drawing patterns in the sand.
West coast in the distance.
Big contrasts between bright sand and dark vegetated areas.
...
One big deflation hollow and List auf Sylt town in the distance.
By the town at the east coast.
If you want to spend some time outside you often need one of these.
Traditional architecture.
With thatched roofs.
Caught during thatching.
Sankt Raphael church.
Olympic games style Sylt 2020
Another promenade by the coast.
Wind is Sylt's very important shaping agent. Sand erosion and accumulation patterns can be visible around shells.
Sand is being continuously transported around the island and trapped between obstacles creating wind shelter.
Protecting the land with dam from deflation instead of coastal erosion.
Freshly deposited sand behind the dam.
Sand deposited before the dam on a spit.
AWI research station on Sylt.
Stranded.
Short trip to Westersand on the west side of the island after a busy hackathon day.
The beach.
Suitable for tourism in the summer.
We managed to catch a short moment without wind and Paul didn't manage keep the kite in the air for long.
Leo: "If you tilt the ground the sea would flow away."
Unsocial programmers :)
The end.
